The Mirror says City believe they are in pole position to sign Lionel Messi if the Argentine quits Barcelona in the aftermath of the club's Champions League humiliation.

Inter Milan have also been linked with a move for Messi, although they may struggle to match the financial strength of the two Manchester clubs.

Barca crowned what has been an otherwise poor campaign with a woeful performance against Bayern Munich that saw them hammered 8-2 to crash out of the Champions League.

Messi struggled to make an impact on the game, although the Argentina worldwide forward tried his best and tried to make things happen.

"Lionel Messi looked like a man who has had enough of carrying that team".

"This would be the flawless week to put a bid in for the 33-year-old Argentinian and I could easily see him playing in Manchester - at either United or City. For now, however, he has left the stage to others, as have City". The idea of a discount on his price can not be excluded if the Blaugrana want to capitalize on his sale, instead of letting the Argentine forward leave on a free transfer next summer.

With the everything happening at the Camp Nou on and off the pitch, Messi's future has become unclear and City are reportedly ready to pounce.

The Argentine will surely want to take Barcelona back to their glory days and will want to leave the club in a better place instead of leaving during this tough period.
