More people ill from Salmonella, ate onions from US: Public Health Agency

This extra info was recognized throughout the Canadian Meals Inspection Company's (CFIA) meals security investigation.

More than 300 confirmed cases of illness have been reported in Canada in connection with a Salmonella outbreak involving USA -grown onions.

These products may also have been purchased on-line.

Consumers should not consume the recalled products described below or foods containing these raw onions. Retailers, distributors, manufacturers, and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, and nursing homes should not serve, use, or sell the recalled products described below.

Most people who contract Salmonella recover fully after a few days, but children ages five and younger, as well as older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness, according to the PHAC.

People who become ill with Salmonella often develop a fever, chills, diarrhea, cramps and nausea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

They are linked to contaminated red, white, yellow and sweet yellow onions from California-based Thomson International Inc.

The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

In their latest update released Friday, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) states that 339 cases have been confirmed in the country. Please refer to the Public Health Notice for further details on this active outbreak investigation.
