A heroic surfer from Australia took on a great white shark to save the life of her wife after she got attacked and mauled by the predator.

Shelly Beach is also popular for weddings as there is hand-carved sculptural timber furniture including King and Queen Chairs and an entrance archway at Harry's lookout.

He and other beach-goers then helped her to shore, where she was treated by local paramedics and later flown to hospital.

Police said the woman and a man were surfing when she was bitten on the right calf and the back of her thigh.

There have already been a handful of fatal shark attacks in Australian waters this year.

Let's all hope Chantelle Doyle makes a fast recovery from the injuries that she sustained from the frightful shark attack. "But then her leg started to get numb".

It is the third shark attack on New South Wales' northern coast in two months.

"This fella paddled over and jumped off his board onto the shark and hit it to get it to launch her after which assisted her again into the seaside", Surf Life Saving chief exec Steven Pearce revealed.

NSW Ambulance obligation operations supervisor Andrew Beverley praised those that carried out first assist on the lady. "They did an awesome job before we arrived", the spokesman added.

Mark Rapley was surfing with his 35-year-old wife Chantelle Doyle when a shark, later identified as a juvenile great white, attacked her and held onto her leg.

This latest incident comes after a string of shark attacks in recent months, including one which saw a boy, 10, pulled from a boat by a shark in Tasmania.

Lifeguards at Port Macquarie have now closed seashores within the space following the assault.

One of them was in WA in January, when experienced diver Gary Johnson, 57, was taken near Cull Island, close to West Beach in Esperance.

Surfer Peter Lobb described listening to her chilling screams as she was being attacked whereas sitting on her surfboard within the shallows of Shelly Seaside.
