Sanllehi sanctioned the transfer deals for the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Dani Ceballos and Kieran Tierney, but Arsenal are already investigating why they had to part with £72 million for the signature of the Ivory Coast global. Perhaps even he didn't realise his own position was being considered.

Arsenal's overhaul of their footballing operations shows little sign of slowing down after the club announced the departure of their head of football Raul Sanllehi.

In the same statement, Venkatesham, who has been at the club since 2010, said there was "much work to do" to ensure Arsenal were competitive again.

"Raul has made a big contribution during his time with us and will always be part of the Arsenal family", said the Kroenkes in a club statement.

Venkatesham said he was "grateful to Stan Kroenke, Josh Kroenke and the rest of the Arsenal board for their trust in me" but his lack of experience in terms of dealing with players and the football department points to Arteta's remit being expanded beyond being simply a "head coach" with Venkatesham describing him as "absolutely fantastic, dynamic". This appears to have been the reasoning behind the club's acquisition of Chelsea's Willian, who is represented by agent Kia Joorabchian. There are many positives to build on across the club.

"Our fans expect and our fans demand that this football club wins trophies and is at the top of the game both here in England, but also in Europe".

"Personally, I now look forward to taking some time off and spending time with family and friends before setting to work on a new challenge and cheering Arsenal on to great things".

"And if we look at our academy, I think we're in really, really strong hands with Per Mertesacker and we have some of the most exciting young talent in the league".

"I am proud to have been part of its history and I thank Stan and Josh Kroenke for this opportunity".

Commenting on his departure, Senllehi said: "I'm proud and pleased with the contribution I've made at Arsenal over the past three years, and look forward to enjoying the club's future success".

Arsenal will be playing in the Europa League next season even though they failed to finish among the top four teams at the recently concluded Premier League season.
