UK's Princess Anne to mark 70th birthday in low-key fashion

According to Anne's son-in-law, Mike Tindall - he is married to Anne's daughter, Zara - the family had planned to mark his mother-in-law's milestone in Scotland but alternative arrangements had to be made due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic hitting Europe, there were reportedly plans for a Buckingham Palace party to celebrate Anne's milestone birthday, but like so many marking special occasions during this hard time, the Princess Royal has had to alter her plans. It features unseen family footage and conversations with her daughter, her son, Peter Phillips, and with her husband, Vice Admiral Tim Laurence.

She is also linked to over 300 charities and is often described as one of the most "hard working" members of the royal family.

The princess was born third in line to the throne, but was leapfrogged by her younger brothers Andrew and Edward when they were born, and she is now 14th in line.

Anne has experienced everything from a kidnapping attempt to Olympic joy, raised a family and supported the Queen in her role as head of state for decades.

The photographs had been taken in late February, a handful of months in advance of the coronavirus lockdown started out and forward of her birthday on Saturday.

She also stated lockdown has been "the longest time I've ever spent" at her Gatcombe Park residence.

"It's impractical to go around in life dressed in a long white dress and a crown".

Speaking about Princess Anne's military promotion, which has been approved by the Queen, the Ministry of Defence praised the royal for being "hugely supportive" of the armed forces.

She won gold in 1971 at the European Championships for Equestrian, representing the United Kingdom.

Sport has featured in her life ever since.
