The UK wages excluding bonuses rose by 0.2% YoY vs. -0.2% expected.

Statistics from the Office for National Statistics shows that the unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over increased to 4.6% (128,000) over that period, a 0.1% increase on the previous quarter.

The number of people claiming jobless benefits rose by 73.7K in August, against expectations +100K and +69.9K seen previously.

Unemployment in the United Kingdom edged up in July even though large sections of the economy reopened after the coronavirus lockdown, a signal that the jobless rate is set to spike higher when a government salary-support scheme ends in the autumn.

After Northern Ireland, Wales had the second highest rate of economic inactivity at 22.9%, up 0.6 percentage points on previous year.

To prevent an immediate spike in unemployment when the lockdown was announced, the government introduced the Job Retention Scheme, which saw it pay the bulk of the salary of people that firms kept on payroll rather than making them redundant.

Early data for August is also gloomy with the number of employees in the United Kingdom on payrolls down by about 695,000 from March compared to 659,000 in July, according to the ONS.

It is a relief that unemployment has increased at a slower rate in Wales than the United Kingdom as a whole.

"This includes a National Transition Training Fund to support up to 10,000 people at risk of redundancy or unemployment and the Scottish Youth Guarantee, worth £60 million, will ensure every young person has the opportunity of work, education, or training".

Matthew Percival, Confederation of British Industry director of people and skills, said: "The easing of lockdown restrictions and a more flexible Job Retention Scheme in July have led to the beginning of a recovery in vacancies and hours worked".

The national claimant count in August was 2.72m - up 2.8 per cent on the month and 102.8 per cent (1.5m) since March.

Comparing the figures up to July with those up to April in Wales, unemployment went up 1,000.
