The University of MI jumped a spot while maintaining its ranking as one of the top public universities in the country in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings released Monday, Sept. 14.

"This consistent ranking is a result of the hard work and exceptional talent that our faculty and staff pour into serving our students at the highest levels". In addition, the college guide regularly places the greatest emphasis on retaining and graduating students as well as how well schools graduate students who received federal Pell Grants.

Pell Grant-eligible students now constitute around 24 percent of entering classes at the University.

University of Kansas in Lawrence was Kansas' highest-ranked university, nabbing the No. 124 spot and tying with eight other schools, including the University of Missouri.

Offering one of the most competitive and affordable tuition rates in the country, UM ranks as a top Best Value School among public universities with other institutions such as the universities of North Carolina, Kansas and Georgia, among others. "We do not conduct unscientific straw polls for use in our computations, and schools' ranks are not manipulated to coddle business relationships". U.S. News gathers data from and about each school in up to 15 areas related to academic excellence.

This 36 edition of Best Colleges evaluates more than 1,400 colleges and universities on 17 indicators of academic quality.

Social factors such as athletics and student life weren't considered. Previously, colleges that did not require standardized tests, such as the SAT and ACT, were ineligible for consideration.

Those include graduation and retention rates, social mobility, graduation rate performance, undergraduate academic reputation, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, average alumni giving rate and graduate indebtedness.

The university of almost 20,000 undergraduate students also ranked 60th among public schools, 68th among most innovative schools and 86th among best colleges for veterans, according to the report.

Baker University in Baldwin City ranked 258th among national universities.

The U.S. News college rankings, however, have faced widespread criticism and scrutiny from leaders in higher education.

Washington Post analyst Valerie Strauss criticized the rankings' input data, writing, "Rankings are still ridiculous when it comes to choosing a college".
