"In the first half, he was running for his life there", Bengals Coach Zac Taylor said afterward. The Cincinnati defense allowed 362 total yards, 155 rushing, and did not force a single Chargers turnover. If the Bengals can't clean that up, it's going to be an uphill battle against better teams.

Overall, however, the Bengals held the Chargers to a touchdown and three field goals.

The Bengals took a low-risk approach with Burrow, using a lot of short passes.

Joe Mixon's fumble on the first play of the Bengals' next drive gave the ball back to Los Angeles, which had three shots inside the 5-yard line but had to settle for another field goal. Austin Ekeler and rookie Joshua Kelley combined for 144 yards on 31 carries while Tyrod Taylor was 16 of 30 for 208 yards.

Just a few hours later, Cleveland fired head coach Freddie Kitchens. Instead, he ended up like so many Cincinnati quarterbacks before him, wondering what the heck just happened.

The reigning Heisman has the opportunity to set himself up for a huge career by piecing together a strong opening season. The interception was the most glaring. The first, to John Ross, in the end zone was catchable. Even so, the Bengals have to feel unlucky to have lost, getting called on a questionable offensive pass interference on the potential game-winning touchdown at the end of the game. The guess here is it won't be long before he's hitting on those throws.
