Described by HMC as the latest evolution of its "Sensuous Sportiness design identity", the new Tucson bares nearly no resemblance to the model it will supersede next year with no two panels being the same. The SUV will be offered in long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase guise in the global market.

The fourth-generation compact SUV will go on sale in Korea in September as a 2021 model.

To make room for this new model, Hyundai has chosen to make the fourth-gen Tucson bigger and more upmarket, and will position it as a replacement for the Santa Fe, which won't return to India. Hyundai calls its latest design language Sensuous Sportiness (yes, really), adding the terms "parametric dynamics" and "kinetic jewel" to the surface detailing. Further more, the new Tucson will come in a long-wheelbase variant for select markets and get a N Line variant globally which will be unveiled later.

2021 Tucson comes with innovative half-mirror type daytime running lamps (DRLs) assimilated within the parametric grille and is only revealed when illuminated.

While the model for global markets has been revealed in 5-seat form, we'vepreviously reported the new Tucson will come to India in 7-seat form only. The Hyundai logo is integrated into the rear glass while the rear wiper is concealed under the rear spoiler. All in, the new Tucson has ditched the current-gen model's rounded, bulky appearance for a design that's decidedly more aggressive and in-your-face.

To go on sale in Korea this month as a 2021 model, the new Tucson will be sold in the US and other global markets as a 2022 model starting from the first half of next year.

What about the 2021 Hyundai Tucson's interior? The new Tucson's interior adopts a minimalist approach, and ditches most physical controls for touch panels.

As before, the new Tucson continues to be a 5-seat SUV, and in terms of features, it packs wireless smartphone charging, a panoramic sunroof, air purifier, 64-colour ambient lighting, 360-degree cameras, memory function for the driver's seat, powered controls for the rear seat passenger to adjust the front passenger's seat, rear AC vents, a digital key (which lets owners unlock the auto with their smartphone), BlueLink connected vehicle features, voice recognition, a dash cam and a Bose sound system, to name a few.

As standard, the dual-screen centre panel comes fitted with an eight-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support sitting on top of a full touchscreen cimate control panel.

At point of introduction, the Tucson will be available with two powertrain choices.

A turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder will continue to be offered however it will be exclusively paired to a new pair of hybrid systems - one self-charging (HEV) and a plug-in (PHEV) - with the HEV developing a combined 171kW/348Nm. The hybrid model pairs the 1.6-litre T-GDI engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 230hp and 350Nm of torque.

The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are even more powerful. This engine is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Tucson will be available in front-wheel drive and HTRAC all-wheel drive forms, with the hybrid and PHEV versions also coming equipped with E-Handling technology, which the automaker says helps improve steering response and directional stability when cornering or in adverse driving conditions.

Befitting of a new model, HMC has also upped its safety game with the new Tucson scoring highway driving assist, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, blind-spot monitor, blind-spot collision warning, surround-view monitor, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, remote smart parking assist, high beam assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist with rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, advanced smart cruise control with stop and go as well as safe exit warning.
