But President Akufo-Addo told the press after the meeting that the military leader has agreed to, upon his arrival in Mali, engage the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) further as part of measures to implement its commitments agreed at the ECOWAS meeting.

West African leaders met the head of Mali's military junta on Tuesday to press for the return to civilian rule almost a month after rebel officers seized power in the fragile state.

Ghana's President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on ECOWAS leaders to work towards the immediate resolution of the political crisis in Mali.

"My reason for this meeting is simple: we need to bring finality to our deliberations of Mali because that country can longer afford any delay in putting a responsible government in place following the events of 18th August when our colleague His Excellency Ibrahim Abubakar Keita was an object of a coup in his country".

Akufo-Addo said that an Ecowas mediator would travel to Bamako in a week and the 15-nation bloc wanted the process finished. The existing sanctions include border closures and the suspension of financial flows.

"I'm hoping that by the time he gets there these things would have been completed", the Ghanaian leader said. "We're talking, hopefully in days, not in weeks" he said.

An earlier ultimatum set by the leaders for a handover by close of day September 15 was not met as Col. Assimi Goita leaves the shores of Ghana for Bamako.

But the junta pushed through a charter on Saturday that says the interim president can be a soldier or a civilian and has not yet indicated when the new government would be named.

Ivory Coast's President Alassane Ouattara insisted the meeting had made progress by "confirming that the president and the prime minister must be civilians".

Mali's neighbours, who are anxious to avoid the fragile Sahel state spiralling into chaos, have not yet reacted to the transition roadmap.
