"Airlines are having to make extremely hard choices to ensure their long-term survival as it will be many years before any normality returns to global travel", he said. The International Air Transport Association doesn't expect passenger traffic to recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.Singapore Airlines isn't the first to offer trips whose destination is the airport from which it departed.

These flights will depart from and land in the Changi Airport which aims at boosting revenues for the airline.

"We are grateful for the fantastic relationship we have built with Singapore Airlines over the last five years and we have proven that the business case works".

The flights could include staycations at Singapore's hotels, "shopping vouchers, and limousine ferry rides" as well, according to Stefan Wood, Director at Singapore Air Charter, an aircraft charter firm.

One of the world's most popular airlines is looking to launch a new three hour long flight route - to nowhere.

"But it is necessary as we foresee travel demand to remain stunted for a long period of time".

Mr Barr said the decision came as part of a broader announcement from Singapore Airlines that they are also laying off over 4000 people from their workforce. The airline also tweaked its forecast and now projects that it will operate on less than 50% of its normal capacity through the end of its financial year.

"The next few weeks will be some of the toughest in the history of the SIA Group as some of our friends and colleagues leave the company", Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong said.

SIA has yet to release prices for its round trip tickets although a survey of just over 300 Singaporeans did indicate that 75% would be willing to pay for such "entertainment".
