A worker at Auckland airport has returned a positive test result for COVID-19, but New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said she does not expect it to shut down quarantine-free travel across the Tasman.

On Monday, thousands crossed the Tasman Sea to enter Australia and New Zealand after the long-awaited end of mandatory quarantine.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Tuesday the employee has a "very clear link at this stage to cases that are high-risk" because the person cleaned aircraft arriving from countries with large prevalence of the virus.

The infected worker was fully vaccinated for the virus.

She told reporters that the worker had been fully vaccinated, adding that while the jab did not fully eliminate the risk of getting infected, it meant that positive cases "won't get sick and they won't die".

The New Zealand government has previously determined a "traffic light" system to decide when the trans-Tasman bubble may need to close again.

"It is truly exciting to start quarantine-free travel with Australia".

Auckland International Airport has split its international terminal in two to enable safe quarantine-free travel.

Is the travel bubble a role model for others?

The individual's job is to clean planes that have flown internationally from countries where Covid-19 is widespread, according to a media release from New Zealand's Ministry of Health. Australia accepts that, ' Ms Ardern said on Tuesday.

Ardern said the case was not connected to the travel bubble with Australia, and the agreement was not impacted.

New Zealand's health authorities were liaising with their Australian counterparts, Ardern said, with no initial indication that the so-called "travel bubble" between the countries would be halted.

'We accept that's going to be part of our journey together.

Both New Zealand and Australia have contained Covid-19 outbreaks and have won praise for their handling of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, there was one new case in managed isolation reported on Tuesday - a historical case.
