Ontario government denies plans to shut down legislature by Wednesday

Social gatherings associated with the services are prohibited unless with members of the same household or one other person from outside the household who lives alone.

The new rules will allow police to stop people only if they feel that they have a valid reason to believe that they are participating in an organized public event, or social gathering.

The brewing political fight and questions about the point of restrictions shuttering most outdoor recreational spaces came as the province again set hospital admission records and intensive care units struggled to save a growing number of patients.

By Sunday, the government had walked back its closure of playgrounds.

Mamakwa notes Doug Ford has opted for carding instead of paid sick days and chose to shut down outdoor activity instead of shutting down non-essential workplaces.

"It's as simple as that".

He said the federal paid sick leave is "being used throughout Canada as an argument not to do something" that would mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

"We learned that, during the last six to 12 months, this virus drives indoors and much less outdoors. We need to do more to stop other, even deadlier variants from getting into Canada", he said.

"Again, it increases inequity, as does closing playgrounds because those who have a backyard will still have their backyard for their kids, those who live in a flat don't, obviously".

He stresses, "People need vaccines not police pulling them over". "This is this blaming mentality that doesn't work here", he explained.

Horwath, for her part, has said the NDP and its MPPs will refuse to co-operate with any suspension of the legislature until the provincial government has implemented public health measures that would curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. He has also asked the federal government for more vaccines.

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says recent provincial decisions have clearly been driven by politics and not public health.

"This is really about listening closely, having an open mind and forgetting about political considerations".
