Fresh Lockdown In Australia's Perth After Virus Escapes Quarantine Hotel

Australian authorities ordered a snap, three-day lockdown in the western city of Perth Friday after the coronavirus escaped from a quarantine hotel housing infected worldwide travellers.

"I know this is hard to take and I wish we didn't need to do this".

The second was his close contact in Perth, Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan said in a televised news conference, where he announced the lockdown. "But we can't take any chances with the virus", McGowan said.

The federal government on Thursday announced restrictions on new arrivals from India, and McGowan said Western Australia would cut the number of returning Australians allowed into the state each week from overseas.

The teams will work to identify passengers who have attended any of the locations listed by Western Australia Health.

A Victorian man tested positive for COVID-19 after travelling from hotel quarantine in Perth to Melbourne earlier this week.

Mr McGowan revealed the man may have been infectious for five days in Perth.

The man is asymptomatic and has three household contacts - his partner and two children.

"This is an important and timely reminder this global pandemic is not over".

Footage broadcast on national television showed instances of panic buying at supermarkets in Perth, and authorities said they were aware of heavy road traffic as people tried to escape the lockdown for the long weekend marking ANZAC Day.

NSW authorities on Sunday said they would investigate how a family of three quarantined in a different Sydney hotel returned positive tests with the same virus sequence as a non-related family of four quarantined in the same building.

The person is likely to have contracted the virus during his two-week quarantine in a Perth hotel, health officials say, raising concerns about community transmission as more virulent virus strains emerge.

Two guests staying in rooms opposite each other tested positive for the virus and were later linked through genomic sequencing, the health department said in a statement.

Other guests who stayed on the same sixth floor at the same time were previously released from the hotel after testing negative.
