Vaccine passports are coming to Manitoba.

The government of Manitoba, in central Canada, will award almost Can$2 million in cash and scholarships to encourage residents "to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible", provincial Premier Brian Pallister said.

"You'll be permitted to travel within Canada without having to self-isolate upon your return", says Pallister, "You'll be exempt from self-isolation if you're deemed a close contact and you'll be able to visit family and friends in a personal care home".

The premier noted the process to order a new immunization card is quick, simple and secure.

Manitobans can apply for the card online.

Digital and physical cards will be available but the province has stated that they will not contain personal health information or data. There is also an option to request a physical card that will be mailed to the address on the applicant's Manitoba health card.

"We hope this is a temporary measure".

"Getting vaccinated and following public health orders to protect each other and our health-care system is the fastest way to save our summer and get back to doing some of the things we love and see the people we miss".

Anyone aged 12 and up who has received at least one dose of vaccine on or before August 2 will be eligible for the first draw.

There will be two drawings, the first on August 2 and the second on September 6, officials said.

"The sooner we're vaccinated, the sooner we get our freedoms back", he said.

The province is expected to make an announcement about its reopening plans later this week, which could include more information about additional benefits for Manitobans who have their proof of immunization.
